Maegan and Hunter love winter, but they didn’t want their Detroit winter engagement photos to feel like a typical snowy session. They wanted something moodier, more colorful, and a little artsy, so we moved from an indoor engagement session at John K. King Books to an outdoor winter session at St. Clair Metropark. The contrast between the two locations gave them a little bit of everything: cozy, eclectic, quiet, and wintry.

Indoor Engagement Photos at John K. King Books
If you’re looking for Detroit winter engagement photos and want to mix an indoor location with a little time outside, a bookstore can be such a good place to begin, especially if reading is already part of your life together. John K. King Books has many aisles, towering shelves, warm wood, and color everywhere.
It works in any season, but there’s something super cozy about wandering through a bookstore in the winter. Maegan and Hunter browsed the shelves, passed books back and forth, tucked themselves into the narrow aisles, and were soft and silly together.

After the bookstore, we headed to Lake St. Clair Metropark for the outdoor half of Maegan and Hunter’s Detroit winter engagement photos. The snow-covered trails and frozen lake gave everything a slightly moody winter feeling they wanted, while Maegan’s bright red coat added the perfect hit of color.
They wandered through the snow, spotted deer along the way, played around on the ice, and ended the evening lighting candles in the snow as the light disappeared. Totally okay with taking photos in the dead of winter if this is the vibe and we can make deer friends!

We saved film for the outdoor half of Maegan and Hunter’s session, playing with some motion blur and double exposures.
